Arlene Coates narrowed her eyes at Bhima. “So you’re a dog. I’ve never been alone with a dog.” Bhima approached her and sniffed at her knees, the stump of his tail in rapid motion.

“What’s so interesting about my knees?” she asked. But then Bhima was up on his hind legs, his paws on her knees. Reaching forward, he buried his nose in her crotch. “Okay, that’s enough of that!” she said, and stood up. This succeeded in getting the little dog’s paws off her knees but did not really dissuade the sniffing. She sighed. “Why do people want you around?” she asked, rhetorically.

She heard a signal alert and turned to see that the incoming message light was lit on the dash. She opened the radio channel. “Coates here.”

“You’re out at the native village, right?”

“Cut the shit, Tikuri, you know exactly where I am.”

“Just doing everything by the book.”

That caught her off guard. “Why? What’s up?” Tikuri only did things “by the book” when he was being forced to do something he really, really did not want to do.

“Got a direct order from the governor’s office for you to return to colony.”

“What the fuck for?”

“Ours is not to reason why, Driver.”

“For reals, Tikuri. What’s going on?”

“I don’t know. Some crap about a hydraulic cylinder recall.”

“Why is that coming from the governor’s office and not maintenance?”

“Beats the shit out of me. Smells like three-day-old fish if you ask me.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“I want you to fucking obey your orders.”

“You want me to bring her in.”

“Yes.”

“How are the chaplains going to get home?”

“The governor’s office said they’d send out a replacement transport.”

“Did you get a requisition for a replacement transport?”

“No.”

“This is complete bullshit.”

There was silence on the other side. Then, “See you in an hour and a half, Driver.”
